Health Insurance refusing to add newborn as dependent

Hey everyone,

I’m stuck in a bind and was wondering if anyone had some advice. We just had our child born a little over 30 days ago. I called our insurance company a few days after he was born to add him as a dependent and they told us to wait for the birth certificate to add him. I said ok no problem. Our birth certificate was delayed and arrived this past Monday. I called to add all the documentation and they are now refusing to add him as a dependent because it is outside the 30 day window. Nobody ever mentioned anything about 30 days when I called them earlier during the month.

I escalated through my company’s HR department and after hours on hold and speaking to a manager they gave me a hard no, even though they gave me incorrect information initially that I had to have a birth certificate on file when I tried to add him several weeks ago.

I now have a $14,000 outstanding bill addressed to my newborn from the hospital, and he is uninsured. Is there a way I can get this taken care of? I feel like I’m stuck in a bind and feel terrible that I didn’t know about this 30 day deadline. I even tried calling my insurance company directly and they said it’s up to my employer who already said no.
