When was the last time you reviewed your policy?

If your health insurance policy ends soon, it’s probably the right time to start thinking about what you might do next year. Your current health insurer may notify you around 30 days before the end of your policy, but you’re able to start comparing and considering your options at any time.

As you may already know, health insurance premiums tend to increase each year as you age, and along with that, your requirements may be slightly different too. While you don’t have to review your renewal every year, doing it once in a while is sensible to make sure you’re covered for the things you need and that you’re not paying over the odds. With there being several leading health insurance providers in the UK, you’re somewhat spoilt for choice.

We understand that reviewing health insurance every year is a bit of a drag, which is why we offer our free of charge, renewal review and switch service, where our experts do all of the leg work on your behalf.

Why should you review your policy at renewal time?

The main reasons you should review your health insurance policy when it’s due for renewal are:

You could improve your cover, reduce your annual premiums or both. The FCA recommends that policies are reviewed each year. You get peace of mind that the policy you have continues to meet your requirements.

How does our free health insurance renewal review service work?

Each year, around a month before your health insurance renewal date, one of our advisers will contact you to see whether your circumstances or requirements have changed. Following that, they’ll research all of the UK’s leading health insurers to see whether you might get better terms elsewhere. Finally, they’ll come back to you and offer free independent advice on the pros and cons of changing providers.

Hassle-free policy review in five easy steps:

Submit a renewal review request by completing the form above. One of our independent health insurance brokers will perform a thorough market review on your behalf. They will be in touch to talk you through the options and discuss whether it’s worth switching. You decide what you’d like to do, stay with your current provider, or switch to a new one.If you choose to switch, our adviser will take care of everything for you.

If you choose to switch, be sure to protect your medical history

If you choose to switch health insurance providers at the point of renewal, it’s vital to ensure that your current inclusions are carried over to your new policy. There are certain circumstances where it can be worthwhile changing your underwriting terms at renewal, but only if it improves your position. If our brokers believe that the current inclusions you have may be compromised by switching health insurance providers, they’ll tell you so and advise that you stay with your incumbent.

Provider renewal process

The process your health insurance provider will take in respect to renewals will always be a little different from others, but broadly you can expect the following to happen:

Your current health insurer will contact you, letting you know that your renewal is due soon. Some providers will give you a quote there and then, but others will ask you to get in touch to discuss the renewal of your policy. The cost of your health insurance policy is likely to increase at the point of renewal owing to several factors. Firstly, you’re a year older,  and a fact of life is that our risk of illness increases as we age. Secondly, you may have claimed the past 12-months, and if so, that will affect the cost of your renewal. Finally, and entirely outside of your control, the cost of private treatments in the UK may have increased, owing to broader medical inflation. As we have explained, there are almost always factors pushing the price of your policy up each year and the only way to combat that is to shop around regularly to mitigate it as much as possible.Once your provider has assessed your renewal, considering any changes you may wish to make, they will let you know your renewal price. Assuming you have spoken to an independent health insurance broker before getting your renewal quotation, you’ll be in the best position to decide what you’d like to do and whether you’d like to stay with your current provider for another year or switch.

We must point out that you should review your health insurance regularly. You, of course, don’t have to do it every year, especially if prices don’t change too much, but please consider it once every other year at least. We often see people overpaying by a substantial amount purely because they haven’t had the time to review their policy renewal. As a reminder, the service other brokers and we provide is free of charge; our advisers do all the leg work, meaning you can be confident that you’re getting the best price when you renew.

Health Insurance Renewal FAQs

How do I renew my health insurance?

When your current provider contacts you to let you know that your policy will renew shortly, we’d recommend that you take the opportunity to compare the best health insurers to make sure you’re still getting the best deal. You can either do this by contacting each of the companies or request a comparison quote via us, and our brokers will do the market review on your behalf. Once you’ve decided what you would like to do, you can contact your existing provider to either agree to continue for another year or cancel your policy.

Should I renew my current private medical insurance or shop around?

You should always shop around, if not every year, once every other year to make sure you’re still paying a fair price for your policy. The nature of health insurance is that the cost of policies increase as you get older, and if you don’t shop around, you can find yourself paying over the odds for your policy. We provide a free service where our advisers do the leg work for you and review the market each year on your behalf.

What are the benefits of renewing my private health insurance?

Arguably the most significant benefit of renewing your policy with your current provider is that you’ll save time and won’t need to consider any other options. That convenience often comes at a cost, though, and we often find that it’s the customers that don’t shop around once in a while that end up paying over the odds for their private medical insurance.

I previously had private medical insurance through my job. Can I continue this policy?

You may have the option to buy a continuation from the work policy, but this isn’t the same as a renewal. If you’re leaving a scheme, it’s usually best to shop around to see which provider is the best fit for your requirements. Your previous employer’s insurer often won’t be the best health insurance provider for you.

Will my health insurance premium change upon renewal?

Health insurance usually increases each year as you get older, and it could also be affected by any claims you’ve made and the cost of private healthcare in the UK. It’s for this reason that we always recommend reviewing your policy each year, else every other year, making sure you’re not overpaying. We offer a free renewal review service which you can use by requesting a quote.

What does it mean to renew a health insurance contract?

A health insurance renewal is when you commit to another year of medical insurance with your current insurer. The terms of the policy may be similar, except for any changes notified. Renewals do usually cost more than previous premiums simply because you are a year older. You can, however, avoid the increase by shopping around and seeing if a different provider can offer you the same or better terms at a better price.

Does health insurance renew automatically?

Most health insurance will automatically renew to ensure that you don’t accidentally lose cover and existing terms. Each provider differs, but in most cases, they will write to you in good time to allow you to review your policy and make changes before it renews.

Some health insurance providers will have it written in the policy terms and conditions to renew each year automatically. If you would like to avoid this, you can either contact your insurer and request that this not happen or appoint an independent broker such as ourselves to review your policy each year.

Will my health insurance premium change upon renewal?

Usually, your health insurance premium will rise each year to account for you being a year older and for inflation in the cost of medical treatments. That said, you can often limit the increase by switching to another provider. Our free Renewal Review service is the perfect way to quickly compare the market to see if you can get a better deal.

Is there a difference between health insurance renewals for businesses and individuals?

No, the process is essentially the same, but businesses will typically find more changes to the policy due to it covering more people with potentially more claims.

How often will I need to renew my health insurance?

In the UK, you typically need to renew your health insurance each year, and we would recommend you review your policy at the same time to make sure you’re getting the best terms and price.

Should I renew my current private medical insurance policy or shop around?

It is, of course, up to you, but we would always recommend shopping around to see if you could get a better deal. We understand that searching for health insurance can be time-consuming, which is why we provide our free of charge Renewal Review service. We do the leg work to find the best policy for you.

What are the benefits of renewing my private health insurance contract?

Renewing your health insurance with your existing provider will typically be a quicker process but will often cost you more than if you shopped around. In certain circumstances, you would also better protect your medical history by staying with your existing provider.

Come renewal, would I benefit from purchasing a health insurance policy with a new provider?

Sometimes, yes, you would. It’s always best to shop around and see what other providers have to offer. If you don’t have the time, you can use our free Renewal Review service to do all the leg work for you. If you haven’t moved for several years, you’re almost certain to get better terms and pricing from a different provider.

What are the benefits of transferring my company health cover onto a personal policy?

If you have a medical treatment underway or upcoming, or if you’re in the process of making a claim, you may be able to continue the process without any effect on your medical underwriting terms.

How do I transfer my health insurance from one company to another

You will first need to compare the providers in the market and choose the one you wish to transfer to; once you’ve done that, you will need to notify your existing provider and then pass your certificate of insurance to the new one. The process can be a bit complicated, which is why we always recommend using our free Renewal Review service, which does all the hard work for you.

Can I cancel my health insurance policy at any time?

No, not without paying a cancellation penalty. If you wish to cancel your policy, you’re best to speak to your provider or look at your terms and conditions to see what applies to your policy specifically.
