2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer's Inline-Six Gets Better MPG Than the V-8

The EPA has rated the 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer with the new 510-hp twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six, called the Hurricane. The new powertrain gets 14 mpg city and 20 mpg highway, for 17 mpg combined, slightly better than the 15 mpg combined that the 6.4-liter V-8 returns. The six-cylinder will be available across the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer lineups in 2023 in two states of tune, with the lesser version making 420 horsepower.

The 2023 model year will see Stellantis’ new twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six, named Hurricane, introduced across the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer lineup. But before that happens, a limited run of 2022 Grand Wagoneers will be sold with the high-output version of the Hurricane, producing 510 horsepower and 500 pound-feet of torque. Now the EPA has released fuel-economy ratings for this new powertrain setup, and the high-output Hurricane beats the Grand Wagoneer’s 6.4-liter V-8 when it comes to efficiency.

The EPA rates the all-wheel-drive, six-cylinder 2022 Grand Wagoneer at 14 mpg city and 20 mpg highway, for 17 mpg combined. This is notably better than the 6.4-liter V-8, which returns 13 mpg city and 18 mpg highway for 15 mpg combined. Starting in 2023, the Hurricane will also be available in the Wagoneer, which is currently fitted with a 5.7-liter V-8. With all-wheel-drive, the 5.7-liter nearly matches the Grand Wagoneer six-pot’s fuel economy with 15 mpg city, 20 mpg highway, and 17 mpg combined. It’s worth noting, however, that this comparison is with the high-output Hurricane, and the 420-hp standard-output version that will also be available next year could return better figures. The Wagoneer is also offered with rear-wheel drive, and the six-cylinder will likely return even better fuel economy with that setup, regardless of power output.

The six-cylinder will be the only engine available in the new-for-2023 long-wheelbase Grand Wagoneer L and Wagoneer L. The extra length and weight will likely knock the fuel economy down a tad. For now, the new inline-six is only available on the 2022 Grand Wagoneer in the top specification, making it the more powerful engine in the lineup. It costs an additional $2000 over the 471-hp V-8, and dealerships are currently accepting orders.
