Engine malfunction in recalled car’s engine causes fire

“Park the vehicles outside and away from structures. This isn’t a defect that only happens while you’re driving. It can happen after you’ve parked and gone into your house,” said Executive Director for the Center for Auto Safety Michael Brooks.

A warning for owners of some popular cars. The ride you depend on to get you where you need to go could catch on fire while in drive or park.

Theressa Williams said her son noticed his 2013 Hyundai Sonata was smoking while parked under the carport moments after he returned home from getting gas.

“So, he lift the hood up to look and see what was going on then he noticed it was on fire. So, he closed the hood down to go inside to get his grandmother and the car just engulfed in flames,” said Williams.

The fire was contained to the carport and attic, but the home did receive water damage. The Baton Rouge Fire Department said the fire started as a malfunction with the car’s engine. The Hyundai Sonata is just one of millions of cars that have been recalled for the very same reason.
