Any tips for terminated insurance?

Hello, I would appreciate any advice. I am helping a friend who purchased Kaiser insurance through Virginia marketplace. She had her bills on automatic payment. Her bank card was compromised and she had to have her bank re-issue her card. She thought she had updated all payments, but Kaiser fell through the cracks. After three months, she had the insurance terminated for nonpayment of the premium.

Unfortunately, during that three month period, she had surgery, and several other very expensive procedures . This occurred during month two and three, so Kaiser is not obligated to cover any of the bills.

Now her insurance is terminated, and she is going to be responsible for these bills, which are about five times her annual salary.

She went to marketplace and applied to have the insurance reinstated, and of course Kaiser denied it.

What should she do? She is extremely poor and this is devastating.

I am going to help her file an appeal, but I wanted to see if anyone had any tips
