BCBS denied hospital stay because it was “deemed not medically necessary”

My girlfriend recently had a neck surgery (ACDF) at an in network hospital and the doctor advised that she would need to spend the night in the hospital afterwards to ensure everything was fine with her before being discharged. Obviously we agreed because we were told it was necessary from the doctor. They ensured us that insurance approved everything and we were good to go.

Fast forward a week later and she gets a letter in the mail from Blue Cross Blue Shield saying that the hospital stay was not covered due to it being not medically necessary. They said that since she had no serious medical conditions, she did not need to stay overnight after the neck surgery.

The only reason she stayed is because the doctor told her that it was a necessary part of the surgery. If we had known insurance wouldn’t cover it, she would not have stayed.

We haven’t received any medical bills yet, but she is now stressing about the possibility of being billed thousands of dollars that neither of us can afford all because we listened to the doctor. What can we do in this situation? She is definitely planning to call the insurance/hospital today, but what do we even say?
