My children have secondary health insurance through my employer policy and primary health insurance through their dad's employer's policy.

My employer policy is ridiculously expensive and no good (finding this out as a new employee now that I've actually used it), and I want to drop the kids off of the policy, but I'm being told I have to wait until open enrollment next March.

The alternative would be to produce documentation about a qualifying event with a date within the last 30 days, such as a policy renewal letter for their primary insurance.

Their dad hasn't authorized me to call about the policy even though I have joint legal custody. I asked him to either authorize me to call on the policy to ask for a policy renewal letter or to get me a policy renewal letter himself.

Are there any other steps I could take to prove to the secondary policy that it should be able to be dispensed with?

My HR department is really just our lead accountant, who doesn't have time to answer these questions for me, and the benefits coordinator through the broker is not someone I'm allowed to contact directly. I feel like my access to information is limited so I am putting it out here to the glorious internet to see what y'all can come up with đŸ˜‚
