How to get health insurance that covers split time in two states?

Hi, everyone. My wife and I (54, NY) are negotiating a year-long marriage separation. Our health insurance was complicated to begin with because I did some work for my wife’s LLC and she got us insurance through a Professional Employer Organization. (I would not recommend this. The IRS did not like it and I had to go through an adjudicated hearing and prove that I was not an employee of the PEO.) Anyway, we quit that and have been on COBRA since.

I have been unemployed for some time and now am considering relocating to California, where an old friend of mine said they would help me find housing and employment. Until I’m able to get a job I will only have some spousal support, which will go into an account in my name, but as we are not divorcing at this time we’re not fully dividing all our accounts, assets, and debts.

The issue is, like most affordable insurance plans these days, ours gives no out-of-network coverage and doesn’t have any providers outside of the region. On top of that, the separation we’re negotiating would be split with me in our NY apartment for five months and then in CA for 7 months in short-term housing, which makes it unlikely I would qualify for residency in CA even if I wanted to do that. I also would appear to have a lot more money than I do while I’m still married, which could make it hard to find subsidized marketplace plans. So now I’m not sure how to remain insured in one state without losing my coverage in the other.

I haven’t been able to find current PPO plans that would (maybe) cover me and weren’t too expensive for my means, and there’s no guarantee I’ll get a job with health insurance coverage in that period. Is there a solution I’m missing here? Or do I either have to hope I don’t get sick for 7 months (and can get my prescriptions mailed or transferred) or switch to CA residency for 7 months to get a plan, only to possibly have to switch back again?

Thanks for any insights or advice!
