I will never financially recover from this. (250k husbands debt).

TLDR: Husband uses drugs and goes into a coma for two months. 20 out-of network doctors visit him and charge 250k+ in bills. Don’t know if I am liable? or we can fight these charges?

BACKSTORY: I am from Canada and three years ago I travelled to California for vacation. I fell in love with an American boy and we got married quickly. It was the only option so I could get residency and we could be together since he cannot come to Canada due to having 2 DUIS. (I am the bread winner and super responsible. He is terrible with money and has addiction issues which I didn’t know at the time).

After getting married, I soon realised how bad my husbands drug and alcohol addiction was. One night he got sick from drugs, and went to the emergency room. His oxygen dropped so low they were forced to put him into an induced coma for 2 months. During this time about 20 or so doctors from out-of-network saw him. He obviously couldn’t choose his doctors as he was asleep in a coma. He had an extremely rare case of pneumonia and almost died. You can imagine how fast his bills racked up.

NOW: Fast forward a year and he is normal and healthy now. When I go on his insurance account he has more than 250k in bills because they don’t want to pay for out-of-network doctors. He obviously was not able to make sure the doctors were in-network while in a coma. Physical bills that I have received to the house total up to around 30k. It has been a year since the incident so I’m hoping the physical bills that I got to the house are the only ones he truly owes?

ISSUE: My husband doesnt give a shit about these medical bills. He was already in debt with poor credit. He hasn’t bother to call or rectify the situation. Me on the other hand, have worked my ass off to make good money and save and have good credit. I have had to do all the work trying to figure out how to get these medical bills resolved. This has caused huge struggles in our marriage and divorce is on the horizon.

I have sent a huge package to the department APPEAL AND GREIVANCES yesterday explaining the situation and all his medical bills. They said this is the last change for the medical bills to get covered.

QUESTIONS:

Even though we only received 30k in physical bills, do you think we still owe the 200k that is still on the insurance account?

Will I be forced to pay half of these medical bills if we get divorced?

Any other words of advice? I can’t believe I might be on the hook for this when I begged and begged to do everything to help my spouse. Now I am paying for his irresponsibility.

Thank you!
