Insurance No Longer Covering NIPT Test

Backstory: Back in May, about 11w into my pregnancy, I had some bloodwork done to test my baby for any chromosomal abnormalities. First blood draw was inconclusive, second blood draw was also inconclusive (and now labeled me high risk due to low fetal fraction), and after seeing a genetic counselor I took a third test through a different company and finally received results. My insurance (CareFirst: Blue Choice Triple) covered all of my bills and I did not have to pay. I have only been on my own insurance since May so I’m very inexperienced with issues involving it 😅

Yesterday I received a letter from Carelon (?) saying that they have now deemed the test (the first draw) to be medically unnecessary and will no longer be covering it. I have 180 days to mail a written appeal to an address they listed. I am able to contact my insurance customer service to get more information about the denial which I’ll be doing tomorrow. From there I guess I’ll have to figure out who else I should contact to gather information to write my appeal.

Has anyone else dealt with insurance changing their mind on covering something? Or maybe you’ve written an appeal to your insurance before? How did it work out for you? Any advice??
