Medi-Cal Preexisting Conditions- California

Hi everyone,

My boyfriend and I are in a bit of a pickle and any advice is appreciated. He unfortunately lost his job late last year and his insurance ended 12/31. We went to sign up for Cobra and it’s very unaffordable 700$ for his one person. We called coveredca and they said if he signs up now he will be covered starting 2/1 with medi-cal. Well in late december last year he had an instance that he needed to go to urgent care and they recommended he get a colonoscopy. His condition hasn’t gotten better and he’s finally open to seeing a specialist. But wouldn’t that mean since he has a gap from 12/31-2/1 that this will now be considered preexisting condition and they will not cover his subsequent treatment for the same issue? I understand Cobra can cover retroactively, should he pay 1month of insurance so there is no gap, would they cover preexisting conditions if he switches to Medi-Cal after January? Thank you guys so much with all the stress of losing his job and a potential health scare, it has been tough for us.
