New insurance, need new doctor, help?

So I’m officially 26 and off my mother’s insurance plan and on my own. I am wanting to “follow up” on some medical concerns that I last experienced 8 years ago and have seemingly returned as of late (last few weeks) – don’t worry, the original results were “inconclusive” and my doctor recommend me just go about life unless they got worse (or in the event they disappeared, like they did, to come back if they returned).

Problem is, my doctor of the last 15 or so years doesn’t accept my new insurance so I need to find a new one.

As a first time experiencer of “doctor shopping”, how does one choose a new doctor? Based off of reviews and just going to them one at a time until you find one that “feels right” to you? Stick with a doctor until complications arise? Entirely based on location and distance/drive from home/work?

Also, when searching under covered doctors, would I filter by “general practice” or “family practice” for a PCP?

As a side note, anyone know if UHC (United Healthcare) requires referrals to see specialists?
