Question about appointment date versus claim submitted date

I have an important doctor's appointment scheduled during a time I am uninsured. I will be insured as of April 1st and my appointment is today, March 20th. I am in the U.S.

I called and they said to come in anyway, and likely the front desk can help with making sure the claim won't be filed until after April 1st.

I said OK, but that doesn't make sense to me. Even if the claim comes in after, won't my insurance provider be looking at the date of the actual appointment to see if I qualify for coverage? Or will they just simply look at the claim date?

Additional context also: the reasoning behind why I'm just finding this out is because my new employer gave me misleading information that insurance starts on "Day 1" when in-fact it starts on the first day of the month following start date; also, I am aware COBRA is an option but it's insanely expensive.
