Special enrollment period to treat cancer at a better hospital.

I have a recurrent sarcoma. The first 2 times it occurred, I was treated at a sarcoma center that has a good reputation, but is not the best one. I chose this center because my Healthcare.gov plan was based in the state, and the insurance company (Anthem) would not approve treatment at the #1 Sarcoma center in the US located a 1 hour drive away in a neighboring state.

This time around I want to get treated at the other sarcoma center. The insurance company is fighting me again, so a thought came to mind: why don’t I just establish residency in the state to get my treatment using a special enrollment period?

The following questions come to mind: – If I use the special enrollment period, how quickly does coverage start? I need to get treated within the next month so any “30 day lag before coverage starts” situation won’t work. – does the money spent towards my out-of-pocket max carry over to this new plan?

If anybody has had experience with special enrollment periods, and how quickly they can start coverage after enrolling, that would be great,y appreciated. Thanks.
