Two concurrent insurance plans question

State is Calif.
In March I was on my spouse's health insurance through his employer. We both had the same primary care provider. She retired. We found a new doctor and he switched to her without issue.

In June I took a job and selected insurance through them. I did not have my spouse remove me from his insurance yet because I want to confirm 100% that I can change my PCP as well. If my new insurance won't allow me to select her as my PCP, then I will cancel my insurance and stay on his insurance.

So currently we are paying two premiums. I've read that this is ok and want to confirm this.

Second issue: I have a daily medication (NOT a controlled substance) that had a six month refill with my previous doctor (the one that retired). I need to get that refilled but will not be seeing my new PCP until a week after my prescription runs out. Obviously her office can't prescribe something without even seeing me, and my previous doctor retired.

What are my options here to get a carry over of this medication until I get a refill from the new PCP? It's a daily medication that should not be stopped abruptly. My previous PCP that retired was part of a large medical office and I could see any doctor there or a nurse practitioner, so I suppose I could make an appointment just to get a refill but it's difficult to take time off work for a five minute visit to refill a prescription when I'm seeing my new doctor a few days later.

TIA!
