UHC denied claim for lab work stating "procedure is unproven" and requesting "scientific evidence"

I’ve been diagnosed with HPV related cancer in my throat and as part of the diagnosis my doctor did the NavDx® blood test by Naveris, Inc. UHC has denied the claim stating

Benefits for this service are denied. The service is not covered because your plan only covers proven procedures. This procedure is unproven. In order for this service to be considered for coverage, you or your provider must submit scientific evidence that shows this service is safe and effective for your condition. (PE)

I’m not sure what to make of it. I doubt a well known surgeon at a top hospital (Georgetown University Hospital in DC) would be performing unproven procedures. The doctor’s office was a bit incredulous at the request to submit “scientific evidence that shows this service is safe and effective for your condition” and believe that this would need to be handled by the lab provider Naveris and UHC.

I haven’t received a bill from anyone yet, I only see in my UHC portal that the claim is denied. Is there anything I should be doing at this point, or is the denial just part of the process with proprietary blood tests like this, and should I expect that there is back and forth happening behind the scenes between the doctor, lab, and insurance company?
