Each year, off-roaders and brand loyalists make it to Moab, Utah, for the Easter Jeep Safari. The event, which spans two weekends in the spring, provides guided off-road trail rides through the gorgeous scenery of the nearby national parks. It also gives Jeep the opportunity to show off its latest concept vehicles, which gives us a peek at what’s in store for the future.

This year, Dan Edmunds drove out in a 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe, a plug-in-hybrid variant of the popular mid-size SUV. He also got behind the wheel of the plug-in-hybrid Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 4xe, the all-electric Magneto 2.0 concept, and a few other nifty vehicles.

The plug-in hybrids show how you can still have the regular Jeep experience in a wide-open landscape without range anxiety. You don’t need to worry about what happens after the electricity runs out, because the gas engine means you can keep going. On the other hand, the Magneto 2.0 concept shows that Jeep is clearly thinking an all-electric Wrangler with enough range is a future possibility.

Why would you want an all-electric off-roader? The concept may seem strange at first, but there are many advantages: torque, quiet operation, and the ability to use regenerative braking not only to recover energy, but also to ease the vehicle over ledges and down drops in complete control.
