MetLife Australia has been recognised as an inclusive employer by Diversity Council Australia (DCA) for 2023-2024. With this, the insurer has become the only life insurer to be certified.

This is the second time MetLife participated in DCA’s inclusive workplace survey in Australia. The insurer achieved the inclusive employer status by scoring higher than the National Index Benchmark on all measures, including awareness, inclusive organisational climate, inclusive leadership, and engagement.

“We are focused on continuing our progress on diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) at MetLife and thrilled that this important work has been recognised again by DCA with our inclusive employer status. It reflects what we have done to ensure our people are able to bring their authentic selves to work, and that they know they will be accepted and supported,” said Richard Nunn, CEO of MetLife Australia. “Our people are the backbone of our business and our diverse customers rely on them everyday – this is why this work is so important to us.”

Diverse workforce

MetLife has come up with different DEI initiatives since participating in 2023. This includes joining Pride in Diversity and holding World Pride celebrations and inclusion education events. The insurer also supported the interinsurance research to uncover the experience of LGBTIQ+ insurance customers.

Further, the insurer launched its second Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan to continue the journey of reconciliation and established a disability and neuro-diversity information hub to inform and educate employees. Among other events, it observed and celebrated key calendar moments, such as International Women’s Day, Mardi Gras, and Wear It Purple Day.

“We know that inclusion has significant benefits for both employers and employees. DCA’s Inclusive Employers Index is a rigorous process that reveals the state of inclusion and diversity across participating organisations,” said Lisa Annese, CEO of DCA.

“It’s an opportunity for workplaces to show their commitment to inclusion, reflect on their achievements and identify ways to do even better. Recognition as an inclusive employer means your organisation is doing the necessary work to create a welcoming and inclusive workplace where everyone feels valued and respected.”

“[We] recognise that our workforce is changing, as are their expectations of MetLife when it comes to practices that support DEI. Participating in the Inclusive Employer survey gives us valuable insights to help us continue to evolve to meet the needs of our diverse workforce,” said Nunn.
