NTI welcomes changes to address ‘ransom’ tow truck costs

28 November 2022

Transport and logistics specialist NTI has praised recently implemented changes to WA tow truck legislation that provide protections to drivers from additional service costs.

Under the new legislation, tow truck drivers are now required to provide a statement with the maximum fees that must be signed by the driver or an authorised representative before the vehicle is towed.

The changes aim to remove additional fees drivers had been facing following an accident, which advocates had been saying were unfairly applied.

NTI Head of Claims Services Tim Pontifex says the new legislation assists in removing “unscrupulous operators” who were holding owners “ransom with exorbitant fees”.

“One driver was recently charged $35,000, when a reasonable price would be about a tenth of that,” Mr Pontifex said.

“These drivers are already dealing with the emotional trauma of having been in an accident. They don’t need the additional stress of dealing with unreasonable and unjust towing costs.”

The Insurance Council of Australia also recently applauded the changes, describing them as “a step in the right direction for improving pricing transparency and accountability”.

Mr Pontifex warns motorists to remain vigilant, saying there might be instances where drivers will feel pressured to authorise a tow without a signed statement as the changes are implemented.

He tells drivers to “know your rights and stand firm” and to consult with their insurer if they have any questions.
